As part of its flexible COFRAC scope, Phytocontrol becomes the first French laboratory accredited on the analysis of Pyrrolizidine Alcaloids by UFLC-MS\/MS with quantification limits varying from 0.5 to 2\u00b5g\/kg depending on the type of matrix.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The laboratory is able to detect and quantify 29 Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids in the following products: Dry Plants, Spices, Tea, Cereals and Derived Products, Leafy Vegetables, Honey and Food Supplements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA), of the alkaloid family, are naturally occurring toxins produced by various plant species that may be present in some foods. PAs pose a risk to the consumer because of their carcinogenic and genotoxic properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present, these substances are not regulated by the European Union but have already been the subject of numerous studies\/controls, in particular by the BFR (German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment), EFSA and DGGRF.
In the French decree of June 24,2014 establishing the list of plants, other than mushrooms, authorized in food supplements and the conditions of their use, quatit\u00e9 in PA is to be monitored on seeds and borage flower. A restriction requires that the preparations of this plant are authorised if it can be demonstrated that they do not exceed 1 \u00b5g\/kg of pyrrolizidin alkaloids.
