EFSA has just\npublished its assessment of the risks to human and animal health from\nglycoalkaloids in potatoes and derived products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Glycoalkaloids\nare naturally present in many plants of the Solanaceae family (potatoes, eggplants,\ntomatoes) and contribute to their resistance to pests and pathogens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ingestion of\nglycoalkaloids can cause intoxication with acute gastrointestinal symptoms such\nas nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts have\nidentified a health problem for infants and toddlers, taking into account both\naverage and high consumers. In adults, there is a health problem for high\nconsumers only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lowest dose at\nwhich adverse effects are observed was calculated at 1 mg\/kg body weight per\nday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To date, European\nregulations have not set any limits to be respected in food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, some\nEuropean and non-EU countries have set national limits between 100 mg\/kg and 200\nmg\/kg glycoalkaloids not to be exceeded in potatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To reduce the\nglycoalkaloid content in food, the EFSA recommends peeling, boiling and frying\nvegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You should know\nthat our laboratory searches for glycoalkaloids (chaonine and solanine) in potatoes\nunder COFRAC accreditation (Scope N\u00b01-1904 available on the COFRAC website).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
