Alkaloids are toxic secondary metabolites. These organic compounds, naturally present in some plant species, can be used to protect themselves from environmental factors.
Their analysis is the subject of a European Commission recommendation (n°2015/976/EU) which provides for monitoring of the potential contamination of foodstuffs which may be caused by these Datura alkaloids. A second recommendation is made by the DGCCRF concerning ergot alkaloids (2012/154/EU).
